Alvin College Announces Pipefitter Training Opportunity

A career in pipefitting provides good job security and potential for advancement in a career expected to be in demand for many years.

Prospects are asked to complete an application. Prospect will be considered based on eligibility requirements. A prospect must demonstrate a readiness to begin and to validate no barriers to attending. Barriers include such things as reliable transportation, dependable day care (if appropriate), and no physical or academic limitations that would hinder success in the program. The training provides an excellent opportunity for veterans returning to civilian life, workers seeking a career change, and to young people seeking a satisfying profession. Women are encouraged to apply. A high school diploma or GED is not required for admission to the program.

Pipefitting is the occupation of installing and/or repairing piping and tubing systems that convey liquid, gas, and occasionally solid materials. Pipefitters differ from a plumber who typically concentrates on lower pressure piping systems for sewage and potable water (tap water) that is typically glued, soldered, or threaded. Typical industrial process pipe differs as it is under high pressure and requires different materials be fused through precise cutting, threading, grooving, bending, and welding.

The work involves selecting and preparing pipe or tubing, joining it together by various means, and the location and repair of leaks. Pipefitters are in demand in many different settings, including HVAC, manufacturing, hydraulics, refineries, chemical plants, ships and ship building, power plants, pipe lines, construction, and other steam systems. Pipefitters work with a variety of pipe and tubing materials including steel, copper, iron, aluminum, and plastic.
