ACC Students Win at Art Show

ACC Students Win at Art Show

After spending three and a half years learning pottery, painting and jewelry arts at Alvin Community College, Elizabeth Thomas decided it was time to enter her artwork into a juried show for the first time.

She entered her sculpture, Doves in Flight, at the Texas City Art Festival which opened on Sunday, April 13. To her surprise, Thomas won the three-dimensional art category for the show.

“I was really surprised,” she said. “I didn’t think I would win.”

Also winning at the Texas City Art Show was her instructor Jackie Liddell, who encouraged Thomas and her other students to enter their work.

Liddell entered a watercolor painting of her grandson playing under water and received first place in the two-dimensional category. There were 356 entries overall in the Texas City Art Festival this year.

ACC Art Department Chair Dennis LaValley said he was proud of Thomas and Liddell’s accomplishment.

“They have represented Alvin Community College well in the competition,” LaValley said. “It doesn’t happen very often that a student and a professor win in the same art show.”

Thomas has enrolled in many art enrichment workshops with the college in several areas. She is now taking a painting course with Liddell.

While she has been creating art work for more than three years, she didn’t have the urge to enter her pieces into a juried show.

“Jackie really encouraged me to participate,” she said.

Thomas’ entry was an abstract piece inspired by rock formations found in canyons. The work is more than 40 inches tall and took Thomas more than three weeks to complete.

“That was probably the most outstanding thing I’ve ever accomplished,” she said.

Thomas would go on to fashion an entire series of pots based on the design of Doves in Flight.

Lidell has won awards at other juried art shows in the past and said she was more focused on her students’ work in Texas City.

“I was so excited for my students,” Liddell said. “Their work looked very good alongside the other professional work in the show.”
