ACC Students Named to All-State Band

ACC Students Named to All-State Band

Three clarinetists and one percussionist in the Alvin Community College Music program were recently named to the All State Band.

Josh Berry, of Pearland; Sarah Bowman, of Alvin; Gabriel Degner, of Santa Fe; and Soledad Garcia Vasquez, of Alvin were awarded spots on the honorary band.

Students from 20 Texas community colleges try out for the All State Band every year and only a few are selected to perform at the February concert. Each participant submits recorded entries which are then judged.

"Making the Community College All State Band is a great honor and is achieved by hard work and dedication. I am very proud of these students and their accomplishment," Griffith said.

As part of the concert, the performers will attended the Texas Music Educators Association clinic and rehearsed with a university director prior to  performing in the concert.

Bowman performs with the clarinet and said she is looking forward to the concert event.

“I feel honored, proud and excited to have earned a place in the ALL State Band,” she said. “I hope to gain the experience of playing a wide variety of music, and meeting other people who enjoy music as much as I do.”

While he is glad to be named to the All State Band, clarinet performer Degner admits that he’s apprehensive about the upcoming performance with his peers.

“I look forward to practicing the music,” he said. “I also look forward to playing in a band with people roughly my age.”

Garcia-Vasquez also performs with the clarinet and said the All State Band is a unique opportunity.

“The intense rehearsals reflect the rigorous work needed to become a member of the Community College All State Band, and the concerts put on by each member can give us an idea of the type motivation needed to fuel all musicians,” she said. “There is many things that I hope to learn from this unique experience, but I mostly wish to observe other clarinetist and their performing style, and their interpretation of the Clarinet and how it contrast with how I see the clarinet should be performed.”
