ACC Receives Grant for Nursing Simulation

The Texas Workforce Commission issued a $243,556 grant to the Alvin Community College Associate Degree Nursing program to for patient simulation.

The funds will be used to purchase equipment to be used in patient simulation scenarios with an emphasis on interdisciplinary care. The grant was issued through the Workforce Commission’s Jobs and Education for Texans program.

“These grant monies will provide simulation equipment (medium and high-fidelity simulators and manikins), equipment to care for patients in an interprofessional simulation, and other equipment necessary to increase the training of students preparing to become registered nurses,” said Dr. Debbi Fontenot, ACC Associate Degree Nursing director.

Patient simulation is an important aspect of preparing nursing students for the workforce.

“Due to the complex nature of a typical patient’s healthcare needs, it is essential for nurses to work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team,” Fontenot said. “Instituting an interprofessional simulation will teach nursing students the critical skill of communication and teamwork with other members of the healthcare team.”

Obtaining a JET grant is an important boost to the Nursing program, one of the most in-demand programs at ACC.

“We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this generous equipment grant that will allow our students to increase their own unique skill sets while also learning to work with others as part of the larger healthcare team,” said Dr. Cindy Griffith, Vice President of Instruction.
