Speaker Talks About Generation Z

As a new generation of Americans start taking college courses this fall, instructors in higher education must understand how differently these students view the world and their education.

“Our students deserve relevant teaching,” said Dr. Tim Elmore, author and international speaker on education. “We feel like we’re in new territory.”

Elmore spoke during the Alvin Community College Fall Convocation on August 15.

Generation Z, Americans born after the year 2000, are now entering college classrooms and these students are a departure from the Millenial generation in several ways, Elmore said.

Students in Generation Z are used to having information at their fingertips through their phones. Providing them with information in class may not always be enough for them to understand properly, Elmore said.

“We have content many times without context,” he said. “There are five different generations on campus today and each one of them communicates differently and so they’re motivated differently.”

College instructors must keep track of technological changes and provide more context for their younger students. Generation Z is reporting higher levels of anxiety about their future given that they grew up during times of economic recession, Elmore said.

Young students have been raised in a world that is fast-paced, full of convenience, entertainment, nurturing and entitlement, he said. Which means they come to view things like slower pace, difficulty, boredom, risk and hard work as bad, Elmore said.

“Yet these elements are important for becoming an adult,” he said.

With social media and technology playing a huge role in the lives of Generation Z, many of the jobs that these students will pursue in the future do not yet exist, he said.

“We have to get them ready for a new world,” he said.
