ACC Drama Announces 2018-19 Lineup

A mystery about a stamp collection, a Christmas musical about holiday traditions and a Broadway musical trilogy are in the lineup  for the Alvin Community College Drama Department’s 2018-19 season.

The season will kick off with Mauritius, which will run from October 6-13. Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) will run from December 1-8. The spring musical The Apple Tree will be performed March 2-9.

The productions for the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival on June 24-27 and July 22-25, will be announced in the near future.

We’re very excited about this year’s season,” Drama Chair Dr. Jay Burton said. “We have three very original shows which have not been seen in this area, at least for some time. It’s a great season that we hope the community will come share with us.”

Mauritius is a play about two half-sisters, Jackie and Mary, whose recent inheritance of a stamp collection may be extremely valuable. They join a mysterious stamp owner in trying to cash in on the collection

“Yes, philately—that innocent pastime beloved of geezers and geeks—isn’t as genteel as you may believe,” Burton said. “Drop any other plans you may have and treat yourself to this thrilling show that is both gripping and tartly amusing, with its sour, disillusioned view of sibling relationships and human behavior inspired by desired objects.”

Performances on October 6 and 11-13 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on October 7.

The holiday production will be Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) is a musical about three actors who attempt to perform every known Christmas story along with showing other holiday traditions throughout the world.

“This is a fresh take on a classic tale, well, several dozen classic tales,” Burton said. “In a fast, furious, and slightly irreverent style three actors decide to perform every Christmas story ever told. Santa Claus, Rudolph, the Grinch, and just about every other seasonal character make an appearance in this racy comedy that will have you laughing all the way to the New Year.”

Performances on December 1 and 6-8 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on December 2. Auditions will be on October 9 at 7 p.m. in the Theatre.

The Apple Tree is a musical series of three stories tied together with a common theme of characters dealing with the realities of getting what they want.

“The first story, The Diary Of Adam And Eve is based on a book by Mark Twain,” Burton said. “The second, The Lady Or The Tiger? explores the fickleness of love in a rock and roll fable set in a mythical barbarian kingdom. The last act Passionella is based on Jules Feiffer's story about a chimney sweep whose dreams of being a ‘glamorous movie star’ nearly sabotage her one chance for true love.”

Performances on March 2 and 7-9 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on March 1. Auditions for the musical are December 11 at 7 p.m. in the ACC Theatre.

The two titles for the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival have not yet been announced. Performances for the first play will be at 10 a.m. on June 24-27 with a 7:30 p.m. performance on June 27.
