ACC Upward Bound Receives STEM Funding

The Alvin Community College Upward Bound program recently received approximately $40,000 in federal funding for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education.

The Upward Bound program will use the funding to increase STEM-related programs for Upward Bound students. The grant was issued by the U.S. Department of Education.

“Upward Bound participants will explore career prospects and real world uses involving computer coding, building a computer, engineering research conducted by UH professors, as well as exposure to learning more about worldwide energy sources,” said Marilyn Dement, ACC vice president of Student Services. “Students will gain knowledge about STEM related careers preparing them for potential professional opportunities in the energy industry.”

Upward Bound seeks to motivate low-income and/or potential first-generation college students and help them develop the skills they need to complete secondary education and succeed at the postsecondary educational institution of their choice. The purpose of the program is to build confidence and self-esteem, while providing the necessary tools and guidance to foster academic success.

The federally-funded program started at ACC in 2003. It was created by the Department of Education and works with Alvin High School students.

The STEM programs will be concentrated career exploration in Energy, computer science training and engineering training. The new programs will also include collaborations with the University of Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

“The opportunity to provide our students with a lengthy experience exploring STEM careers at this level of exposure, along with networking directly with STEM field-related leaders and researchers, will no doubt have a profound and positive impact on students’ future career choices,” Dement said.
