ACC PTK Inducts New Members

The Phi Theta Kappa Mu Upsilon Chapter at Alvin Community College recently inducted its newest members during a recent ceremony.


The chapter added 24 students to the honor society at the induction ceremony on October 11.


“Phi Theta Kappa is a very important part of our college,” said Dr. Nadia Nazarenko, ACC dean of General Education and Academic Support.


Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges.  Members follow four hallmarks, including scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.  To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, students must have completed at least 12 college credit hours at ACC and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

“This chapter is growing and making an impact on our community and the lives of our students,” Nazarenko said. “You have a very exciting journey ahead of you.”

More than 4,000 ACC students have been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa since the ACC Mu Upsilon Chapter was created in 1963.

Students in Phi Theta Kappa will participate in community projects and research projects during their time in the organization. Among this year’s projects volunteering for the ACC Skilled Training Rewarding Independence and Vocational Education (STRIVE).

“Engagement in campus activities positively impacts student development, helping students gain valuable skills of independence and interdependence; teamwork and communication competencies; as well as leadership qualities,” said guest speaker Hollie Williams, ACC Retention director. “Phi Theta Kappa has an international reputation for scholarship achievement, student leadership, and community service. You are joining an amazing group of students from all across the country who have demonstrated their ability to achieve academic success in the two-year college setting, and you should be proud of your successes.”

The newest members are: Muyiwa Adeyemi, Alyssa Barker, Cynthia Cedillo, Michael Durham, Katelynn Hall, Kristina Heng, Haden Holtje, Alyssa Hughes, Ardyce Jackson, Hannah Knight, Yolanda Mena, Diana Mendoza, Xavier Navarrete, Hannah Noel, Tonia Quackenbush, Renita Perkins, Eloy Phillips, Khawaja Raza, Anica Jade Ramillano, Stephenie Rogers, Mandi Steiner, Matty Sullivan, Soledad Garcia Vasquez and Kelly Wainscott.
