ACC Regents Approve Process Tech Grants

ACC Regents Approve Process Tech Grants

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents Approved $339,000 in grant funds to build a Process Technology training unit during their meeting on Thursday, April 24.

The unit will be used by students to learn about the different instrumentation used in process technology as well as certain chemical processes. The grants were provided the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

ACC Process Technology Chair Curtis Crabtree told regents it will be up and running by the fall 2014 semester.

At the start of Thursday’s meeting, the board recognized regent Brenda Brown who will be leaving her position after not filing for reelection. Two challengers, Jody Droege and Patton Ritter, are vying for her seat in the May 10 election.

The board presented her with a ceremonial rocking chair in recognition for her 24 years as a regent.

“It has been a pleasure,” Brown said.

Regents also stood and gave a standing ovation to ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright who presided over his last meeting after serving the college for 38 years.

Dr. Christal Albrecht will begin her tenure as the fifth president on May 19.

The board received the 2013 annual report from the ACC Foundation about its college involvement. President Jody Droege reported more than $57,000 in scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors  and current ACC students. Last year the foundation also awarded $10,000 for workforce development scholarships and nearly $5,000 in Innovative grants.

Droege reported that the Foundation used proceeds from its events in 2013 to create two endowment scholarships in honor of President Dr. Rodney Allbright and Congressman Randy Weber.

Foundation financial advisor Scott Bolton told regents that the Foundation is fiscally sound and its investments are doing well in the market.

“I’m pleased with our portfolio’s performance,” said Scott Bolton, Foundation financial advisor.

The Foundation will sponsor the upcoming Author’s Luncheon with baseball legend Nolan Ryan on May 28 and will kick off the annual Summer Concert Series on June 12 with Cory Morrow.

In other action the board:

-approved the purchase of a new phone server

-approved the purchase of digital radios for the police department

-approved the resignation of two employees and the hiring of an instructor

-approved a contract for the college natural gas provider

-approved recommendations from the ACC Job Evaluation Committee

The board will next meet on Tuesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.
