Brenda Brown Leaving ACC Board of Regents

After serving 24 years on the Alvin Community College Board of Regents, Brenda Brown will be leaving her position, deciding not to run for reelection.

As a regent, Brown said she gained a full appreciation for the college and what it has to offer to the community.

“I like what the college stands for,” she said. “I always liked what I saw out there and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Brown is a former educator who was first elected to the board in 1990. Before that she had long been a board member of the ACC Foundation, joining two years after it was created in 1976.

“Brenda Brown was the second woman to serve on the College Board and has worked tirelessly to see the College grow and prosper,” ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright said. “Her legacy will be a college ranked in the top 10 percent nationally.”

As a member on the Foundation Board, Brown has contributed a lot of her time to help raise funds for student scholarships, college programs and staff development.

“While she is leaving the Board of Regents, we are grateful that Ms. Brown will remain on the Foundation Board, which is a testament to her dedication to ACC,” said Wendy Del Bello, Foundation executive director.

Brown has a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southwest Texas State University, taught at Brazosport High School in the 1960s and served as a substitute teacher throughout the years.

In addition the college, Brown has also devoted time to the American Association of University Women, Alvin Mothers Club, Alvin Library Board and the Aglaian Study Club.

Brown said she ran for the Board of Regents because she wanted to serve her community and support the mission of the college. She said ACC provides so much to local students who need an education.

“It is not so expensive that it is prohibiting,” she said. “This college caters to students and gives them a chance to work with a schedule.”

Since the time she’s been on the board, Brown has participated with several projects including the creation of Dual Credit, construction of the new Communications Building, passing of the 2005 bond issue for the Science/Health Science Building and more.

“There’s been a lot of changes in 24 years,” she said.

Brown said she plans to travel more and spend more time with her children and friends.

“The college has just meant a lot to me, education means a lot to me,” she said. “ACC is the greatest asset that Alvin has. Community colleges are an open door for our students.”
